Public Health AmeriCorps Community Health Worker

Program: We the People Community Health Worker Corps

Purpose

We the People Community Health Worker Coalition supports community members representing communities most impacted by health disparities in becoming trained community health workers within their local communities. We the People Community Health Worker Coalition provides training and program coordination for We the People Community Health Worker Corps members linked with local community-based organizations and health centers in offering health education and linkages to care focused on HIV/AID, COVID-19, and opioid overdose awareness and prevention as well as community education on mental health resources and crisis management.

 

Description of Duties

Community Health Workers are trained, certified and/or licensed paraprofessionals providing basic health information, preventative screenings, and linkages to care and treatment to health services clients and other members of the community.

Community Health Workers are also often engaged in a broader human services context providing education and training around accessing social services and behavioral health initiatives.

The Community Health Worker (CHW) is a frontline team member performing a wide variety of duties at the paraprofessional level to engage, support, advocate and educate community members and host organization clients on overall health and wellness. The CHW serves as a liaison or link between community members, potential clients and local community-based organizations and service providers to facilitate access and improve health outcomes by increasing health knowledge and self-sufficiency through a range of activities such as outreach, community education, informal counseling and non-medical case management.

Qualifications

·       Minimum High School Diploma, GED or Equivalent required.

·       Experience conducting outreach or recruitment for an organization, project or event.

·       Experience communicating logically and clearly both orally and in writing.

·       Attention to detail with strong organizational, planning skills and ability to multi-task.

·       Interest in community health, awareness and engagement.

·       Ability to work well on teams and collaborate with others.

Time Requirement

·       Full-Time

o   1700 hours of service and active program participation over a 12-month consecutive period

o   (30 to 32 hours per week for 52 weeks)

o   6.5 Hours per day 5 days per week

OR

·       Half-Time

o   900 hours of service and active program participation over a 12-month consecutive period or term approved by the AmeriCorps program and host site.

o   17 hours per week for 52 weeks or 35 hours per week for 26 weeks

*Hours are flexible based upon community-based service events and activities

Standard Schedule: Monday through Friday 10AM to 5PM with an hour lunch

Alternative Schedule: 4 days Monday through Friday and 1 day on Saturday or Sunday

*Monday and/or Wednesday Training Days required 10AM to 2PM per the outlined schedule, subject to change.  

Orientation and Training

Member orientation will include 4 days of mandatory onsite and virtual training and development up to 6.5 hours each day. Orientation will take place within the first three weeks of being approved to being service after having completed the AmeriCorps National Service Criminal History Checks (NSCHC) process.

Weekly members will participate in at least 4 hours of mandatory training and development.

Monthly members will participate in at least one hour of individual professional and personal coaching.

*Trainings and coaching will include a mix of in person and virtual interactions.

Compensation: Monthly living stipend (Maximum available is $1,800 per month)

Evaluation and Reporting

Time and Attendance: Members will submit time and attendance weekly.

Bi-Weekly: Members will submit a listing of community events and organized activities they attended as part of their service. (Including event or organization name, purpose of event/activity and a description of their participation.)

Monthly members will review and submit reporting on the number of community members:

·        Trained

·        Receiving direct outreach

·        Linked to services.

·        Registered as a volunteer.

*Trainings are defined as a presentation facilitated by or organized by the Corps member, program or partners more than 30 minutes in length with an outlined and previously communicated training objective.

*Outreach is defined as any activity directly engaged in by the Corps member to inform, educate, or collect information from community members for generally education and awareness purposes that is less than 30 minutes in length, does not require prior registration and can be conducted without an outlined presentation.

Karaoke for Good Food Drive Coordinator – Coordinate outreach for Karaoke for Good food drive events to collect food donations for the homeless. - Washington, DC

Hydroponics Garden Caretaker – Washington, DC – Serve as volunteer support caretaker for a hydroponics herb garden from FarmShelf. All produce is donated to food bank clients. – Washington, DC

Since 1990 Joseph’s House has served DC’s most vulnerable residents, providing care, understanding, and kindness to those who have nowhere else to go. AmeriCorps members will integrate themselves into our community, providing social and medical case management support and resources for our residents and community members.
